The Kruger National Park was established in 1898, originally as the Sabie Game Reserve and proclaimed a national park in 1926, making it the oldest national park in South Africa, and amongst the oldest in the world.

The reserve stretches 350 km from north to south and forms a border with Mozambican on the right and  where South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe meet at the infamous Crooks Corner, a 1900’s safe-haven for gun runners, poachers, fugitives and anyone else wanting to evade the law. It was an easy hop across the river whenever police from one particular country approached.

A mega Trans frontier or Peace Park was created in the 1990’s which incorporates South Africa’s Kruger National Park, Mozambique’s Limpopo National Park and Zimbabwe’s Gonarezhou park. The new enlarged park now forms part of the great Limpopo Trans frontier Park.

The Kruger National Park attracts over one million visitors looking to experience close encounters with the wildlife in a natural, unfenced environment. Many visitors simply go there to relax and unwind while others are looking for a natural spiritual experience.

Kruger conserves not only natural, but also cultural heritage. There are almost 254 known cultural heritage sites in the Kruger National Park, including nearly 130 recorded rock art sites.

Cultural artefacts of Stone Age man have been found for the period 100 000 to 30 000 years ago and more than 300 archaeological sites, with significant archaeological ruins at Thulamela and Masorini, have been found to date.

Things to look out for:

• The big five – Buffalo, Elephant, Leopard, Lion and Rhino
• Birding Big Six – Ground Hornbill, Kori Bustard, Lappet-Faced Vulture, Martial Eagle, Pel’s Fishing Owl and Saddles-bill Stork.
• Five Trees – Baobab, Fever Tree, Knob Thorn, Marula, Mppane.
• Natutal/Cultural Features – Letaba Elephant Museum, Jock of the Bushveld Route, Albasini Ruins, Masorini Ruins, Stevenson Hamilton Memorial Librial, Thulamela.

Seasons

The Kruger National Park is located in a subtropical area and experiences hot, generally rainy spring and summers from October to March and warm, pleasant autumn and winters from April through September. The best game viewing is in traditionally in the winter when the bush is low and animals congregate around waterholes.

The rainy season brings with it an abundance of water meaning that animals become more widely distributed throughout the park, and less concentrated around man made dams located closer to roads.

Wildlife

Kruger is one of the premier game-watching destinations is the world with approximately 148 mammal species naturally occurring within its borders.

It is possible to see all the traditional big African game, including elephant, black and white rhino, hippopotamus, giraffe, zebra, buffalo, warthog and many species of antelope.

Large cats include lion, leopard and cheetah and other carnivores including wild dog and spotted hyena as well as an array of much smaller but equally beguiling mammal species.
